Schalk Boonzaaier, NSRI Kleinmond station commander, said:At 16h02, Saturday, 04 January, NSRI Kleinmond duty crew were activated to respond to Palmiet Beach following eye-witnesses reporting lifeguards in the surfline rescuing a man from the water.NSRI crew responded and CMC ambulance services and WC Government Health EMS were activated. On NSRI and CMC ambulance service paramedics arriving on the scene we found that lifeguards had initiated CPR ((Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on a 27-year-old man, from Eerste River, who reportedly got into difficulty in the surf after launching into the surf to attempt to rescue a female who was caught in rip currents but once in the surf he got into difficulty himself.Lifeguards had been summoned from an adjacent beach and lifeguards entered the water and reached the man at the backline and he was reportedly lifeless in the water and they initiated CPR after getting him back to the beach. The female reportedly reached the beach and she was not injured.NSRI medics and CMC paramedics assisted lifeguards in extensive CPR efforts but sadly, after efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted he has been declared deceased.Police attended at the scene and Police have opened an inquest docket and the body of the man has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased man.TO REPORT A SEA RESCUE EMERGENCY DIAL 112 FROM A CELLPHONE
