When Roger Hogg from KwaZulu-Natal received a call from the NSRI saying that he had won a Mitsubishi ASX 2.0L in their 4-Car Competition, he was convinced it was a joke.
“I’m a practical joker, so I often play pranks on my friends,” Hogg says. “I’m always waiting for something to come back to me. When the NSRI called me I didn’t know if they were pulling my leg or not. But when they called me again, I realised it was real and I was delighted. I still can’t believe it!”
In previous years, the big prize draw in the NSRI’s car competition would only be held in December. This year, however, one car was given away in July and the rest of the winners will be drawn at the end of the year. The first prize winner will take home not one but two vehicles, namely a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport MY224X4 and Mitsubishi Xpander 1.5L. Second prize is a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0L CVT.
“I started entering the competition in 2000, so I’ve been entering for about 12 years,” Hogg says. “I’ve religiously bought two tickets every year. I am in the shipping and logistics industry, so I often see the NSRI at work. It’s such a credible institute so you always know where your money is going. And, of course, the cherry on top is always the hope that you’ll get to smell the leather of a new Mitsubishi at some stage.”
While Hogg will generously be giving the new car to his wife, the people that are most excited about Hogg’s win are his two daughters. “We have a process of handing down cars as the girls approach 21, and we’ve been puzzling as a family over how we would find the next vehicle. My one daughter has a car, and the other needs a car. We’d just chatted about it the week before. It couldn’t have happened at a more opportune time.”
The NSRI’s 4-Car Competition runs until 13 December 2022, so there’s still plenty of time for you to buy a ticket. Hogg says that even though he’s already had a win, he’ll keep buying tickets for the competition.
“I’m very chuffed that I persevered and I won’t stop. It’s less about winning, and more about donating to a worthy cause,” he says.
