Gerrit Cloete, NSRI Port Alfred duty coxswain, said:At 09h20, Monday, 17 August, NSRI Port Alfred duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from a local man and his friend, visiting from Johannesburg, reporting their boat, a 6 meter craft with 2 outboard motors, to be suffering steering failure to one outboard motor suspected to have been sustained while they were departing through the river mouth to go fishing. They were preparing to abort their fishing plan to instead immediately return through the Kowie River Mouth to the Port Alfred Small Boat harbour. They requested assistance by VHF marine radio communications with Telkom Maritime Radio Services and NSRI Port Alfred duty crew were mobilised.Although they would be able to bring the boat in themselves as a precaution they instead stood by off-shore and out at sea, out of harms way, and they alerted maritime rescue authorities and assistance was immediately activated. Our NSRI duty crew responded to our sea rescue station and we launched our sea rescue craft Rescue 11 Alpha. We rendezvoused with the casualty craft half a nautical mile off-shore.Both men were safe but the steering to one outboard motor was damaged. We took the crewman off the casualty craft and the skipper was able to bring his boat safely in through the river mouth with our sea rescue craft escorting him.Once he had his boat safely on the river they required no further assistance and the skipper will have the steering repaired.
