WaterWise Instructor Debbie Smith, who is based in Port St Johns reports on teaching the rural children surrounding the coastal town about water safety:'Huge fun was had introducing the jiga jive to our learners this month, watching them show me in turn how they jiga jive ahead of their learning session. Learning is about having fun and taking it all in at the same time. Learning is all about arriving early for a school and watching them stand in line, singing the S.A. national anthem in the most beautiful of voices! This phase of WaterWise has seen us go into the very heart of the rural areas to educate learners on water safety. We have driven past the chickens, the cows, the goats, the spaza shops and on ... to the schools. Our area has a total of 90 schools that constitute Port St John’s and surrounds and we have not touched the tip of the iceberg as yet and we look forward to a good and far wider reach in 2015. Our learners are so appreciative of this education and those that have had the enormous benefit of having learnt the WaterWise programme will enter the festive season better prepared for the summer swimming days that lie ahead.'Debbie and some of the children who are now WaterWise.
