Boy,7, missing at Camps Bay

UPDATE : Tuesday 21 December:NSRI and Police divers are continuing to search in Camps Bay for 7 year old Evan Fouten who is presumed to have drowned on Sunday after being swept out to sea a by rip-current.The search by police divers continues to be supported by NSRI Bakoven, local lifeguards and a Police K-9 dog unit.Police divers will have 2 craft on the water today, 21st December, 10 police divers and during this morning NSRI Bakoven volunteers will launch their rescue craft 'Spirit of Rotary – Table Bay' to assist in the search and a Police search and rescue dog will again be put onto rescue craft at sea to assist in the search.Original story:A seven year old Grahamstown boy, Evan Fouten, is missing at Camps Bay and is presumed to have drowned.According to Bakoven NSRI Station commander, Mark Thompson, three children were playing in the sea in the middle of Camps Bay beach.“ They were not in the lifeguards safe demarcated area between the flags and unfortunately went into the water in a rip current. The strong South Easter ( off shore wind), ebbing tide and almost full moon made the current very strong.“ The duty lifeguards saw the children getting into difficulty and managed to rescue one while the other apparently got himself to safety. Unfortunately they could not find Evan,” said Thompson.Sea Rescue was called at 15h38 and SAPS divers, the METRO AMS helicopter and Clifton surf life savers also responded to the scene.An extensive search was launched including 6 police divers searching in the water, the METRO AMS helicopter, two lifesaving boats and the NSRI rescue boat from Bakoven “ Spirit of Rotary Table Bay.” Conditions were unfavorable because of the strong wind and low visibility and the search was called off at 18h45.The search will continue from 08h00 tomorrow.NSRI appeals to people not to swim at beaches where lifeguards are not on duty and only to swim between the flags that demarcate a safe swimming area.
