At 14h08, Tuesday, 17 January, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of 2 persons in difficulty in the surf at Strand Beach.
CCTV camera monitors directed rescue services to the location where 2 persons were in difficulty in the mid surf break.
The CoCT water rescue network was activated.
CoCT lifeguards, NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew, GB Med ambulance services, WC Government Health EMS and their rescue squad, CoCT Law Enforcement, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and their Fire Dive Unit, the SA Police Services, Netcare 911 ambulance services and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter responded to Strand Beach.
CoCT lifeguards launched into the surf and rescued a 17 year old male to the beach. He was medically assessed by paramedics.
The casualties brother, age 20, was missing.
NSRI Gordons Bay launched the sea rescue craft Zelda.
During a search the body of the man was spotted under water on the sea bed.
An NSRI rescue swimmer, deployed from the NSRI rescue craft recovered the man onto the rescue craft. He was brought to the Strand lifesaving club where paramedics applied Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation efforts.
After all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased.
The body of the man, from Delft, has been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man.
