The NSRI’s new winter range was developed with one goal in mind: creating reliable, high-performance gear built for real South African conditions.

The collection includes fully waterproof jackets, heavy-duty waterproof bags, and other winter essentials designed to combine technical functionality with everyday practicality.

“Drawing on my retail background and as an NSRI volunteer Response Rescue Swimmer, I set out to elevate it to the standard of local lifestyle brands,” Head of Retail Brad Gale explains. “The seasonal range is an extension of that strategy, responding to supporter demand for performance gear that works in South Africa's wet winter conditions.”

Designed With Input from Rescue Volunteers

From the outset, the NSRI focused on creating products informed by real-world experience rather than retail trends alone. To do that, the team worked closely with rescue volunteers who regularly operate in harsh weather conditions.

That practical feedback helped shape many aspects of the winter range, including waterproofing, durability, and comfort.

The Gale Jacket becomes a standout favourite

At the heart of the collection is the Gale Waterproof Jacket and the lighter Gale Lite variant, both of which have quickly become standout products among supporters.

“The Gale jacket is 100% waterproof and windproof, with the warmth of a polar fleece lining, and is described as ‘amazing value for money’,” Brad shares.

Both variants feature waterproof seam-sealed shells made from Supertex fabric with a 3 000 mm waterhead rating, Aqua-guard zips, high-visibility reflective strips on the hood, cuff adjusters, and a drawcord hem.

According to Brad, the combination of technical functionality and affordability has played a major role in the jacket’s popularity.

He adds, “Both variants are made to a credible everyday waterproof standard, sufficient for South African winter rain and coastal conditions.”

Waterproof Bags Built for Unpredictable Weather

Beyond outerwear, the NSRI has also expanded its range of waterproof bound bags, designed for supporters navigating unpredictable weather and active lifestyles.

“Our bound bags were engineered for the unpredictable — from shoreline treks to torrential commutes,” Brad says. “Made from robust 500D PVC with high-frequency welded seams, they’re built to be 100% waterproof and keep your gear bone-dry no matter how the weather shifts. It’s a natural fit for the NSRI crew and supporters alike.”

Surprising Fan Favourites

While the Gale Jacket has emerged as a flagship product, supporters have also embraced several other items across the collection.

“Among supporters, the green-and-gold supporters' jersey and the wide range of headwear have been standout performers,” Brad says. “Over 11 000 items were sold in 2025 alone across the range of merchandise.”

For the NSRI, the collection represents more than seasonal apparel. Every purchase supports the organisation’s lifesaving work while giving supporters a practical way to connect with the brand and mission.
