John Dory’s together with the NSRI are proud to announce their collaboration on a Survival Swimming programme for primary school students at Addington Primary School.

John Dory’s has joined forces with the NSRI to bring its Water Safety Education and Survival Swimming Programme to Addington Primary School learners at the uShaka Marine pool in KwaZulu-Natal, starting 30 January and continuing until mid-March. The programme’s aim is to equip 75% of the school’s grade 7 learners with basic survival swimming skills: breath control, floatation, orientation in the water, and propulsion.

Why Grade 7? This age group was selected because they will soon be moving to high school, where they may not necessarily be exposed to free survival swimming lessons. Grade 7 learners also have the greatest potential to impart their newly-acquired swimming skills to family members, peers, and other community members.

John Dory’s has committed to sponsoring an NSRI Drowning Prevention Team of three instructors and one assistant. Each 30-minute teaching session includes a water safety demonstration and a survival swimming lesson.

Each instructor can teach three students at a time over 30 minutes, which means 360 lessons can be taught within a four-hour after-school period over the course of five days. This means that students who need to attend multiple lessons to become competent in survival swimming – as is sometimes the case – can do so, ensuring that all grade 7 learners (or, at least 75%) are competent in survival swimming at the end of the programme.

Finally, the week of lessons will be concluded with a celebration for all participants, with award certificates to competent learners.

The NSRI would like to thank John Dory’s for sponsoring these essential skills and helping to save lives in South African waters.

If you are a strong swimmer, you can become a Survival Swimming instructor and teach life-saving skills. Simply fill out this form to apply.
