OPERATION CENTRE (EOC)

We are thrilled to announce that Italtile Ceramics (Pty) Ltd, along with the Italtile and Ceramic Foundation, has become the first corporate partner to secure its name on the side of the Spirit of Ubuntu – the final Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) in the National Sea Rescue Institute’s fleet renewal programme and one of the most significant projects in our organisation’s history.

This moment is not just about logos on a boat – it’s about South African companies stepping forward with purpose, leading by example and joining a legacy of lifesaving that will protect communities for decades. With only 10 corporate spots available in total, and nine still open, this is a truly unique opportunity for brands from all industries to stand together as champions of safety, solidarity and service.

A Partnership Born from Shared History and Heart

Italtile’s support extends far beyond this campaign. The partnership began in 2011, when Italtile made a substantial contribution to rebuilding the Plettenberg Bay rescue base, a project that strengthened our coastal response capability. A year later, a team of Italtile employees joined NSRI volunteers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, raising funds for the Knysna base renovation, which reopened in 2013. Over the years, Italtile has also donated tiles and sanitary ware to multiple base upgrades, including the Strandfontein rescue base in Cape Town.

In recognition of this early and impactful support, Italtile was honoured with the Alric Simpson Award in 2012, the NSRI’s highest accolade for distinguished service. Two years later, in 2014, the company formalised its commitment as a Platinum Partner and has stood alongside the NSRI ever since, including during critical times such as the Covid-19 pandemic. This gesture became the foundation of a long-term partnership rooted in compassion and ‘ubuntu’ spirit.

That legacy now takes on new meaning through their support of the Spirit of Ubuntu, showing that purpose-driven collaboration can build something truly enduring.

“We are honoured to become the first brand to stand alongside the NSRI on the Spirit of Ubuntu,” says COO of Italtile, Brandon Wood. “It reflects our belief in community, courage and collective impact – values that guide our company and resonate deeply with this project.”

Why the Spirit of Ubuntu Matters

The Spirit of Ubuntu is the final Offshore Rescue Craft needed to complete South Africa’s world-class rescue fleet – a fleet capable of reaching people in distress up to 50 nautical miles offshore and beyond, even in extreme weather. Each ORC costs roughly R26 million and is built to serve for up to 40 years.

This vessel will be stationed at Hout Bay, with challenging conditions such as “Dungeons” – a world-renowned, big-wave surf spot known for treacherous waves that average seven meters but can reach up to 18-20 meters. This rescue boat ensures volunteers can respond swiftly and safely to emergencies far out at sea.

“The Spirit of Ubuntu embodies what makes the NSRI strong – ordinary people, generous partners and courageous crews standing together to do extraordinary things,” says Bradley Seaton-Smith, Head of Marketing & Business Development, NSRI. “With Italtile leading the way, we’re excited to invite others to join us in completing this historic vessel and expanding our life-saving footprint.”

Progress on the Build and Hout Bay Rescue Base

Work on the Spirit of Ubuntu continues to advance well. This vessel (Hull 8 in the ORC build programme) is in the stage where engines, gearboxes, cabling, and internal carpentry, including the chart table and dashboard, will be installed. Early March is the target for transport to the harbour, with launch expected in May and delivery to the station by June.

Alongside the boat, significant development is underway at the new Hout Bay rescue base.

“The project is running at a comfortable canter, and we are confident that the rescue base will be completed well in time for the delivery of The Spirit of Ubuntu,” says Willem de Waal, who is managing the project from Head Office.

“The slipway support columns have been completed, and construction of the steel frame and rails for the slipway will commence in February. This should be completed by the end of April/early May.”

The station will provide modern facilities for our crew and equipment, further strengthening our ability to serve this vibrant coastal community.

We’ll share more detailed updates and images in coming editions – including how Italtile’s branding will appear on the boat and the latest milestones on both build projects.

A Call to Stand with Us

This campaign isn’t just about sponsoring a boat; it’s about standing with the NSRI and each other to safeguard lives and enrich the fabric of our nation. If a company like Italtile can step forward, imagine what your brand could help achieve.

With only nine corporate positions remaining, now is the moment to act.
