Correction:It has been confirmed that a local surfer who sadly passed away at Alkantstrand on Saturday, 19th June, had collapsed in the car park after he had been surfing.RICHARDS BAY:Jacques Kruger, NSRI Richards Bay deputy station commander, said:At 08h58, Saturday, 19 June, NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated following reports of bystander CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) efforts in progress at Alkantstrand Beach.NSRI medics responded and were informed that Netcare 911 ambulance services and Mounties ambulance services had also been dispatched.On arrival on the scene NSRI assisted paramedics with CPR efforts on a local 30 year old male surfer who had been rescued from the water by fellow surfers after he had collapsed unconscious while surfing.Despite extensive CPR efforts sadly the man was declared deceased.The body of the man has been taken into the care of KZN Government Health Forensic Pathology Services and Police will open an inquest docket.Condolences are conveyed to family of the deceased man.NSRI NATIONAL SAFETY ALERT:NSRI are appealing to coastal water users around the South African coastline - bathers, boaters, paddlers, sailors, fisherman and coastal hikers to always have the NSRI emergency numbers programmed in their phones.Dial 112 from your cellphone or call the NSRI EOC (24 hour NSRI Emergency Operations Centre) 0870949774.Local NSRI emergency numbers can be found on our NSRI web page www.nsri.org.za.
